Ukrainian Urban Forum 2019 - "People. City. Factory"

The Ukrainian Urban Forum 2019 took place in the Zaporizhzhia Regional Museum of History and Nature on 21 and 22 June.

"The Ukrainian Urban Forum is an annual event for the acquaintance and exchange of experience of the Ukrainian urban movement. CEDOS Analytical Center is the organizer. The main media partner is the Ukrainian urban platform Mistosite. The local forum partner in 2019 is the public organization "Dzyha". The forum was supported by Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung Ukraine. "- according to the materials of the site

The forum is held a second time. In 2018, this event was initiated  in Kyiv and the theme of the first Urban Forum was "What is a fair city?".

This year  Deputy Head of the Economy Department of the Executive Committee of the Kryvyi Rih City Council Oksana Pavlushenko and Olha Kramarenko, Head of the Department of Industrial Tourism of PU "Kryvyi Rih City Development Institution" of Kryvyi Rih City Council, were the participants from the Kryvyi Rih.

The forum was attended by representatives of cities, public organizations, activists from all over Ukraine.

It was decided to describe the theme of this year's forum in three meaningful words - "People. City. Factory". "The first day of the forum impressed with the opening of the forum. The organizers used interesting forms of work for acquaintance of the participants with the forum and each other. Organization of acquaintances is the first impression of the participants, therefore the successful organization of this stage worked fine. We all got acquainted, learned about each other and in the further work on the forum we worked with the participants which were the closest for us" – it was told by Head of the Department of Industrial Tourism of PU "Kryvyi Rih City Development Institution" Olha Kramarenko.

The forum program included discussion of the hot topics, presentations or performances of participants, as well as series of practical lessons..

«Invited guests and speakers told about:

- effective cooperation between authorities, business and communities

- challenges concerning small cities

- needs of the most vulnerable social groups

- inclusive leisure

- interactions between authorities and the habitants of the city» - according to the materials of the site

According to the participants, the ending of the first day of the forum was especially interesting , because the location of the party, the party was in a revitalized industrial facility Loft mill. This is a good example of the cooperation of the city, business and community. The object attracted the attention of participants involved in the development of industrial tourism in their cities.

Also, the forum program included two excursions to choose from – over the “Socialistic city” district and  to the workers' settlement.

"The second day of the forum began with excursions. We chose an excursion to the “Socialistic city” district, because Kryvyi Rih has similar district. The tour gave an idea of how industrial giants cities of Ukraine are close to each other . Of course, the conclusion is made that the district of the “Socialistic city”  in Kryvyi Rih should be included in the list of excursion objects ", these impressions were shared by Olha Kramarenko, Head of the Department of Industrial Tourism of PU "Kryvyi Rih City Development Institution" of the Kryvyi Rih City Council.

Presentations of forum participants concerning realized projects in the other cities were extremely useful and impressive.

The Urban Forum did not bypass complex issues for the modern cities of Ukraine that are relevant to every citizen. The block "Incompatible phenomena and spaces: complex topics in conversations about the city" covered the topic of cemeteries, balconies and toilets in public space. It becomes clear that such inconvenient issues should also be discussed both at the level of the local community and at the state level.

Summing up, I would like to thank the organizers and participants of the Ukrainian Urban Forum 2019 for interesting presentations, hot topics, cognitive excursions and similar views on problematic issues. Participants exchanged knowledge and returned home being motivated for further accomplishments.

We are looking forward to seeing you again next year!
